Every so often, when the mood strikes, I like to look within myself and ask aloud those questions that have found their way to the forefront of my mind. Instead of being rhetorical in nature, I am soliciting your participation in the form of an actual answer to any or all of my current queries and navel-gazing observations. Thanks in advance for your help in this matter.
Why does Volkswagen have such odd sounding names for their car models? I realize that names like Barracuda and Mustang were already taken but Routan and Toaureg? C’mon man!
Speaking of those cars, why do people play that Punch Dub game every time they see a VW on the road? Better yet, is this a real game or is it a made-up one created as a television marketing tool? My friends and I used to hit each other when we caught a glimpse of an out-of-state license plate but never for a particular vehicle.
Why did I wake-up with a hair-do similar to that of bowling champion Big Ern McCracken from the movie Kingpin?
Why would anybody choose to watch a full-length feature film on the screen of their smart phone? That’s not even considering how crappy the sound would be and all.
Why do I have that old Orleans song Still the One running through my head right now? We’re still having fun and you’re still the one.
How fun has it been watching the San Francisco Giants this season? More specifically, how many shades of awesome has September baseball been?
Conversely, why have the 49ers started off the year so blankety blank blank blank? At least my fantasy team, the SituJason, got off the snide this week with our first win.
Why are you singing Still the One right now? Could be worse, I could have said It’s a small world after all.
Curse you for leaving us with the small world! The last time we went to Disneyland almost 25 years ago, I came off that ride swearing that never again…Le and I are going to The Magic Kingdom for Halloween (how cool is that!) and I will stay far, far away from the Small World.
Seriously? You’re questioning the product naming conventions of a company that once used “Fahrvergnugen” as its tagline?
I learned about the “slug bug” game (also known to some as “punch buggy”) as a kid, so it’s been around since at least the ’70s. VW only recently commandeered it as a TV marketing tool, and tried to expand it to include all VW models, though the “official rules” (http://www.beetlemania.org.uk/pnchbugy.html#2) do not acknowledge its validity for any model other than a Beetle (old or new). As a longtime Beetle driver (both old and new), I was mortified the first time I saw a kid punch another one and realized that my beloved Beetle was provoking playground violence, but I’ve since gotten over it. Slug away, kids!
You think you’ve got bedhead? My typical daily morning ‘do is akin to David Lee Roth circa 1981 (only without the receding hairline).
Still the One is definitely a catchy tune (though the lyric “You’re still the one who can scratch my itch/Still the one that I wouldn’t switch” is iffy), but the Waking and Dreaming album from whence it came has got to be one of the worst. Album covers. Ever. Seriously, fellas – either manscape or put on a shirt (or 8). I don’t care if it’s the mid-‘70s… NO ONE wants to see that!
As for your sports queries, you *know* I got nothin’. The only time you’ll ever find my tuner set on ESPN is during the Scripps National Spelling Bee. (Hey, don’t judge!)
But if you’re truly tired of “Still the One,” there’s always “Afternoon Delight”….
Volkswagon has strange names for their cars because they are a German based car company. Volkswagon means, quite literaly, people car. (was made for large families)
I have no idea ’bout the car names, but I really did like the Volkswagen ad where the windshield wipers were gettin’ into the funk of the street.
Kai downloaded Full Metal Jacket onto my iPod which is kind of the same idea. I have not watched it, but on a long flight, while I watched the in-flight movie, Brian grabbed the iPod and watched it. He didn’t seem to mind given if I recall, the inflight movie was a chick flick of sorts. It’s not bad to watch on the wee screen, but it does suck the batteries.
(Sorry – today’s earworm belongs to Gwen Stefani.)
As far as the Giants go….all I gotta say is magic number = ONE!
Toaureg for the nomadic Africans, il popolo blu – your post is just in time for a festival in Niger!

Jason, you always have a way of posing the tough questions. I don’t have any answers, other than to say that I too woke up with Big Ern hair.
I have a friend who FBs about “guilty pleasure” songs… you know, the ones you sing along to when nobody is looking? Still the One is definitely a contender. If I had an iPhone, I would not watch a full-length video because I would be too busy listening to my “guilty pleasures” music (while riding the recumbent bike): Petula Clark “Downtown”; Neil Diamond “Sweet Caroline”; The Gonna Fly Now theme from “Rocky”. You are not alone.
What do I wonder? I wonder why I can’t watch political debates without wondering about why the heck so and so chose that tie or that hair style or that color combination…,and before I know it the debate is over and I’m watching the local news weather report and am not any more clued in than I was an hour ago. ?
Since I am a romantic I believe that you wake up humming “Still the One” because, corny as the song is, it perfectly expresses what you feel for Fehmeen and she for you. Doh!
Dunno Jason about Routan and Toureg — they sound like computer generated names that did well in German focus groups. But not too far back VW hijacked meteorological terms for their cars: Scirocco for the dry north winds off of Africa to the Mediterranean sea; Golf for the Gulf Stream, Jetta for the Jet Stream….but you probably already knew that.
Now the Orleans song is in my head, thanks a lot!
