Now that the Super Bowl is over and done with for another year, what did you think about:
The Black Eyed Peas Halftime Show. Personally, I would have preferred to have seen them just lip-sync their set instead of actually “singing” it. They were pretty terrible to listen to live and if they thought that a bunch of human glow sticks would provide a distraction from their lack of discernible stage presence, they most egregiously underestimated the Simon Cowell in all of us viewers.
Christina Aguilera’s Star Spangled Banner lyrical malfunction. At the time it happened, I thought I heard something odd going on but I ignored it even after I saw a couple of the Packers players notice the same out of place line. I didn’t think that it was a treasonable offense until I googled her name today. Ouch.
The Game Itself. While the game was close and came down to almost the end, it was by no means memorable. I’m happy that Aaron Rodgers and the Packers won.
The Commercials. With the exception of a scant handful, a vast majority were underwhelming and instantly forgettable. Is it safe to say that the era of watching the Super Bowl for the commercials is over?
The Post-Game Episode of Glee. Fehmeen and I (and Emma) huge fans of the show — one look at our Glee-filled DVR will provide you with plenty of evidence, as will the fact that our preschool-aged daughter can sing nearly every word of nearly every song on those episodes — and it pains me to say so but I wasn’t very impressed with last night’s offering. The songs were great (as usual) but the story was completely lame. Too many gimmicks for the sake of having them (like the cannon). And besides, when does their football season end? Isn’t high school basketball almost over now? Oh well, at least we get a new episode tomorrow.
So now I invite you to chime in on any of these topics.
Oh yeah, lucky Leanne is buying Orange Julius’s (or is the plural form pronounced Orange Juli-eye) for everyone who comments thanks to being the big winner (winner chicken dinner) in the old office pool.
Halftime…guess I’m easily entertained…it wasn’t that bad!
Aguilera’s tune…even if she had the lyrics right, she was WAY out done by miss-Glee before her, on America the Beautiful.
Game…Agree, wasn’t all that great and the right team won.
Commercials….maybe it’s cause it was a total flashback, but the little kid in the Darth Vader suit won my heart.
The ‘reply all’ ad was also a LOL moment.
Post-Game Glee…some of us who relied on our DVR to adjust to the weird time slot missed the last 10 min! of the show. That aside, it’s fiction, J, so don’t get hung up on what sports season it is. That’s why we watch this stuff, cuz reality TV is truly awful.
And you didn’t mention the Michael Douglas intro to the game….I’m a sap and I liked it.
The Black Eyed Peas were terrible. I don’t like that kind of music anyway, but the performance just stunk up the joint.
Aguilera…I don’t really care. It was an innocent mistake. The way some people are acting, you’d think she took a dump on Ground Zero or something.
The game was okay. It was nice to see the Steelers lose. I’m happy for Rodgers.
The commercials were terrible. The only one I laughed at was the Darth Vader VW spot.
Post game Glee…I don’t watch that show, but my wife loves it. She didn’t say what she thought of it, though.
Jason… you are gooood. I agree with all of your comments.
Black Eyed Peas: Something was wrong with Fergie’s voice and her teeth looked like she had invisilign (Sp?) on?
Commercials are the reason I watch …
Even though this isn’t an official commercial…
I DID like the HOUSE commercial, taking after old Coke ad with Mean Joe Green.
I also got a chuckle at the Before and After photos of the kitchen with the Bud Light on the counter.
Glee was terrible…. my DVR cut it off also.
Whats the movie this week?
Well, I didn’t much care who won the Superbowl this year so only half-heartedly tuned in for part of it.
Black Eyed Peas: Terrible. I thought it was just me not caring for their “music,” so am glad to know it’s not just me getting crabby about the crap these young people listen to. 🙂
Totally agree with Suzanne – the Glee woman who sang America the Beautiful was wonderful and brought tears to my eyes. I didn’t like Christina’s rendition of the national anthem and only vaguely noticed the lyrics being botched, probably because I was trying to find the tune in all of the vocal theatrics going on. I heard there was some serious thrashing on the Internet about how hardly any of the ball players had their hands over their hearts while she was singing…
Commercials: The little kid Darth was cute. I also liked the Snickers commercial where “lumberjack” Rosanne Barr got hit in the stomach with a log and landed in the mud. Kim’s mention of the before/after kitchen with the Bud Light bucket reminded me that that was a cute commercial too.
Seemed like there were LOTS of commercials for upcoming movies, too. It also seems like many of these upcoming movies are more about the special effects than plot, but maybe that’s been the case for a long time and I’m just now noticing. I’ve never been a big movie-goer and tend to hang out under a rock and miss a lot anyway.
Let’s get on to NCAA basketball season! That’s where the action is!! Go Tarheels, er, Stanford!!

p.s. I’ve only watched Glee once and could not figure out what all the hype was about. You guys are so hooked on it and for the life of me I don’t understand what’s so great. Probably I’m missing something that’ll reveal itself in the 3rd or 4th season and then I’ll have to Netflix all the old episodes to catch up… not that THAT’s ever happened before!
🙂

BEP – Unfortunate. A lot of sound and fury signifying nothing. I like me some BEP and all, but despite the cool costumes and light-up dancers, it just sounded horrendous. Fergie singing “Sweet Child” made me want to stick sharp pointy objects in my ears. And why didn’t Slash’s top hat light up??
Christina – The honor of singing our National Anthem at America’s #1 sporting event (with the highest viewership in television history, by the way) means you rehearse to the point where you *can’t* eff it up. And her PR people should have issued a statement of apology immediately. FAIL.
The Game. Not a football fan, and I didn’t win anything in the office pool, so whatever.
The Commercials. Agreed, very underwhelming. The VW Power of the Force ad was the clear winner (although they only showed the :30 version — the :60 is sooo much better! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R55e-uHQna0&feature=player_embedded ). Although there were a few chuckles (“Reply All”, FTD “from the heart”), and some major branding missteps (Joan Rivers, Coke, Groupon), overall not much going on this year.
Glee. The storylines jumped the shark long ago, IMHO, but I still derive great pleasure from the overproduced musical numbers, the pithy dialogue and of course, Sue “Syvlester” [sic]. What’s not to love? (Of course, I also loved Steven Bochco’s “Cop Rock.”)
Not.
